Biron Batik — Magenta / New Navy

Biron Batik is one of the newer additions to the China Seas catalog and it came in swinging. The pattern builds an architecture out of batik — layered geometric forms stacked and interlocked in a composition that reads less like fabric design and more like a carved wooden screen or a temple gate seen from straight on. There are angular shapes that could be stylized leaves or stylized shields, navy outlines that do the structural work of leading in a stained glass window, and between them a density of smaller motifs that reward the kind of looking you do when you're holding something in your hands rather than viewing it from across a room. Which makes it, frankly, a better tote bag than it is a sofa. On a sofa you'd see the repeat. On a bag you see the drawing.

Magenta and new navy on ecru is the colorway that turns the volume up without losing the composition. The magenta is vivid enough to stop you — it's the reason you'd spot this bag across a crowded farmers' market — while the navy does what navy always does: holds everything together and asks for no credit. Hand screen-printed on linen in the USA, made into a medium tote in the USA. A bag with the structural complexity of a building and the color confidence of someone who doesn't need to explain their choices.
