Isfahan takes its name from the city that Shah Abbas I rebuilt in the early seventeenth century as a capital so beautiful that the Persians had a saying for it: Esfahān nesf-e jahān — Isfahan is half the world. The tilework alone would justify the reputation. The mosques, the bridges, the bazaar arcades — every surface covered in patterns so intricate and so precisely interlocking that they function as both geometry and theology, the infinite rendered in glazed ceramic.
