Kashmir Paisley - Celeste on Cream
The paisley motif has been making the same journey for three hundred years and has never once arrived. It started as the boteh — the almond-shaped floral spray woven into the legendary wool shawls of Kashmir, so fine they could pass through a finger ring, so expensive that only Mughal emperors and their courts could commission them. When the East India Company began shipping those shawls to Europe in the late eighteenth century, the pattern detonated across the Western decorative world. Scottish weavers in the town of Paisley began producing imitations on jacquard looms so fast and so successfully that the motif lost its name and took theirs instead. The original Kashmiri weavers spent months — sometimes years — on a single shawl. The Scottish mills could turn one out in a day. The motif survived the industrialization because the drawing was always stronger than the method used to reproduce it.
Home Couture's Kashmir Paisley is printed by hand on Belgian linen-cotton — not woven, not jacquard, not digital — which puts it closer in spirit to the original Kashmiri shawls than to their Scottish imitations, even if the technique is entirely different. The scale is generous, the drawing is intricate enough to reward close looking, and the colorway sits in that particular range of soft blues and aged indigo that reads as both antique and current.
